Who we are

Northants 1 is the local radio station for Kettering, Corby and Northamptonshire. It is owned and operated by NN Local Media & Training CIC, trading as NN Media, a community interest company registered in England and Wales (company number 15618473). Our registered office is 17 Station Road, Kettering, NN15 7HH.

When this policy says "we", "us" or "Northants 1", we mean NN Media and Northants 1.

Northants 1 and our sister station, Peak Radio, share some systems and services, and are joint controllers of personal data. Whichever station you contact, your request will be dealt with.

Our approach

We believe in keeping things simple. We collect only what we need, use it only for the reason we collected it, and don't share it with people who have no business seeing it. No small print. No surprises.

What information we collect and why

When you contact us

If you use our contact form, we collect your name, email address and the message you send. We use this only to respond to you. We don't add you to any mailing list without your permission.

When you submit a story tip

If you submit a story tip, we collect your name, email address and the details of your tip. We use this to follow up on stories that might be relevant to Kettering, Corby and Northamptonshire. Your tip may be read by our editorial team.

When you submit a Northants Guide event or Northants Spotlight listing

If you submit an event or local business listing, we collect the details you provide, such as your name, contact information and a description. Published listings appear publicly on the Northants 1 website. We may contact you to check or update your listing.

When you sign up for our newsletter

If you subscribe to the Northants 1 newsletter, we collect your email address. We use it only to send you the newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send.

When you join our Academy Training Programme

NN Media runs an Academy Training Programme, which gives children and young people hands-on experience of radio and media. To run the programme safely, we collect information about each participant, which is similar to what we collect about our adult and young volunteers. This includes:

• the participant's name, date of birth and contact details

• the name and contact details of their parent or guardian

• emergency contact details

• attendance, training records and progress

• recordings, photographs and other work they create during the programme

• where needed, and only with the permission of a parent or guardian, health, medical or accessibility information so we can support them safely

We use this information to:

• run the programme

• keep participants safe

• contact parents and guardians

• record progress and achievements

Access is limited to the Academy leaders and staff who need it, and to our safeguarding lead.

We will only broadcast or publish a participant's voice, image or work with the permission of their parent or guardian.

We will only share Academy information with others where we must do so to protect a child's safety or wellbeing, or where the law requires it, for example with social services or the police.

When you visit the website

Like most websites, our servers automatically record basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visited. This is standard web server logging. It is used only for security and performance, and not to identify you personally.

If you've accepted optional analytics cookies, we may also collect aggregated, anonymised data about how people use the site. This never identifies individual users.

When you answer audience questions

We sometimes ask visitors to tell us their age range, gender and the area they live in. Answering these questions is completely optional.

We do not ask for your name or email address, and we do not link your answers to you, your device or the pages you visit.

We use the answers only in aggregate, to help us understand the audience Northants 1 reaches, plan our coverage and services, and give advertisers a general picture of our audience.

We do not publish or share breakdowns for groups small enough that an individual could reasonably be identified.

If you tell us you are under 16, we do not keep your answers.

Legal basis for processing (UK GDPR)

We process your personal data on the following legal bases:

• Legitimate interests: for web server logging, basic site security, responding to contact messages and story tips, and running the Academy Training Programme.

• Consent: for our newsletter and optional analytics cookies. You can withdraw your consent at any time.

• Explicit consent from a parent or guardian: for any health, medical or accessibility information about Academy participants, and for broadcasting or publishing their voice, image or work.

• Legal obligation: where we must share information to protect a child or because the law requires it.

When we rely on legitimate interests for information about children, we give extra weight to their rights and interests. We only collect what is needed to run the programme safely.

How long we keep your data

We keep personal data only for as long as it's needed:

• Contact messages: up to 12 months, then deleted

• Story tips: up to 12 months, then deleted

• Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe

• Northants Guide and Northants Spotlight submissions: while the listing is live

• Academy Training Programme records: 2 years after the participant leaves the programme, except safeguarding records, which we keep for as long as safeguarding guidance requires

Who we share your data with

We don't sell your personal data, and we don't share it with advertisers. We may share it with:

• our hosting and infrastructure providers (Railway, Cloudflare and Neon), only as necessary to run the service. All operate under appropriate data processing agreements.

• Peak Radio, as joint controller, only where needed to run our shared services

• social services, the police or other authorities, where this is needed to protect a child or where the law requires it

That's it.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

• access the personal data we hold about you

• correct any inaccurate data

• have your data deleted (the "right to be forgotten")

• restrict how we process your data

• object to processing based on legitimate interests

• withdraw consent at any time where consent is the legal basis

To exercise any of these rights, including making a Subject Access Request, email [email protected] or contact us. We'll respond within one month.

Parents and guardians can exercise these rights on behalf of an Academy participant. Young people who understand what they are asking for can also make requests themselves.

You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk if you believe we've handled your data incorrectly.

Children

Northants 1 is designed for a general audience. We do not knowingly ask children to provide personal information unnecessarily.

The main exception is our Academy Training Programme, where we collect information about participants and their parents or guardians, as explained above.

If you believe a child has submitted personal information that should not be there, please contact us and we will review it and remove it where appropriate.

Links to other websites

The Northants 1 website contains links to external sites, particularly in the Northants Guide and Northants Spotlight sections. We're not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites. We show a notice when you're about to leave northants1.co.uk.

Changes to this policy

If we make significant changes to how we handle personal data, we'll update this page and change the "Last updated" date at the top. For major changes, we may also notify newsletter subscribers.
