Following discussions earlier this year, final terms were agreed at a Full Council meeting on 5 August, securing the immediate future of the facility for the town's residents.
Rothwell Library was originally offered out to be community-managed back in 2019 as part of a wider North Northamptonshire Council programme. Under the new lease agreement, the town council and a dedicated team of volunteers will take on the responsibility for all building costs and daily staffing.
Meanwhile, North Northamptonshire Council will continue to provide the book stock, public computers, and self-service kiosks to ensure Rothwell remains seamlessly connected to the countywide library network.
“As Mayor, I am proud that Rothwell Town Council is prepared to take on the library lease and begin shaping a true Community Hub for our town,”
said Cllr Cedwien Brown, Rothwell Town Mayor.
“Our volunteers, families and residents deserve continuity, stability and ambition, and this transition allows us to deliver exactly that. By taking on the lease, we will safeguard what matters most to our community and create new opportunities for wellbeing, learning and meaningful connection within a modern, inclusive Community Hub.”
The move has been widely welcomed by officials across North Northants as a prime example of local communities stepping up to protect essential local services.

added Cllr Greg Wilcox, North Northamptonshire Council’s Executive Member for Communities.
“I look forward to seeing the library continue to grow and develop with Rothwell Town Council at the helm and a dedicated team of volunteers.”
