Kettering and Northampton General Celebrate NHS 75th Anniversary

Today Kettering and Northampton general hospitals are looking back on 75 years of caring for their local communities and celebrating the vital role they play.

75 Years of the NHS

The NHS has been a part of the majority of the population’s entire life. However, 75 years ago, it was a brand new system that marked an historic moment in British history.

On this day (5th July), 1948, the National Health Service (NHS) was born, introducing new healthcare that was accessible to everyone.

In the beginning, no one could have predicted how much the NHS would contribute to the world’s most notable medical breakthroughs.

Since its introduction, the NHS has seen many firsts, including; the first kidney, heart, and lung transplants, the first hip replacement, and the first kidney dialysis.

The NHS has also established many vaccination programmes such as the polio and measles vaccines. It is easy to recognise how life-changing the NHS has been to so many people and today we look back at our local hospitals’ successes on this special anniversary.

KGH and NGH’s Contribution

Since 1948 the two hospitals have expanded from employing a few hundred staff to more than 10,000 in a mind-boggling array of different disciplines.

Kettering and Northampton General Hospitals have been a huge part of these successes. They have provided many services through the years. Some that were once never dreamed of but became commonplace. These services include:

  • A pioneering Surgical Robot at NGH enabling difficult surgeries in hard-to-reach areas.
  • A 24/7 heart attack service at KGH where lives can be saved within minutes of patients arriving by ambulance.
  • A specialist stroke centre at NGH providing vital life-saving care and specialist rehabilitation.
  • State-of-the-art imaging systems like CT and MRI enabling doctors to detect cancers and heart and brain problems.
  • State-of-the-art intensive care units at both KGH and NGH supporting the local populations during the Covid pandemic.
  • Huge developments in the treatment of arthritis with much better drugs and routine joint-replacement surgeries.

These are only a handful of the amazing technological and service developments within KGH and NGH. However, none of them would operate without the skilled staff. Many staff members have trained for years to be able to deliver care to the NHS’s high standards.

We cannot talk about the anniversary of the NHS without mentioning the departments behind the scenes. The services have an army of support from estates, housekeeping, finance, human resources, and information technology. All of whom play a vital role. With the growing demands for care, these unseen hands keep the services running, making sure that we as a community get the care that we need.

The NHS is a vital part of Britain and we are proud to celebrate 75 years of this incredible service. Here’s to another 75!
