The Tesco Extra store on Carina Road was evacuated Tuesday evening due to reports of a burning smell in the store. It had earlier been believed that the cause of the evacuation was a chemical leak. Three fire appliances and police were on scene, with customers and staff gathered outside.
A spokesperson from Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue service told Northants 1:
“Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a burning smell at a commercial premises on Carina Road, Kettering, shortly after 8.30pm yesterday (November 19).
Crews from Kettering and Burton Latimer were deployed to the premises, which was in the process of being evacuated as a precaution.
On arrival, crews liaised with on-site staff, electricians and engineers to try and attempt a source of fire. After a thorough inspection of the building, including the use of thermal imaging cameras to detect any heat sources, no such fire was found.
After finding no safety issues, firefighters gave advice to staff before leaving the scene shortly before 10.30pm.”
The store typically operates until midnight on weekdays and Saturdays, closing at 4pm on Sundays. But has had to close early on Tuesday evening.
