Environmental Health Agency made aware of chemicals sprayed on fruit in Asda Kettering

Fly and Wasp killer was seen to be sprayed on the oranges in Asda, Kettering, on Sunday morning.

Natalie Blisett said,

“I could see a colleague spraying something over the oranges and taking the bad ones out, I saw it was Raid Fly and Wasp Killer. I approached the colleague and he did not deny this and said it was what the manager told them to do.”

Asda has been approached for further comment, the Kettering store refused to comment & we are awaiting further comment from their Leeds-based Head Office.

As the weather is getting hotter, pests become a larger problem, especially around food. Chemicals often come with warnings on the bottle to keep away from the mouth as it can be dangerous.

Miss Blisset said the colleague did not see the problem at first as it was only being sprayed on the peel, which does not get eaten.

There are many ways for this to be consumed however, for example kids touching them, or babies using the peel to help them teeth. Other preventatives could be a better alternative, like netting.

This is an ongoing story and will be updated when further information is available.
